BIC Brunch, January 2022

Open Access in the Book Supply Chain

Thursday 27 January 2022

Introduction

As we know, the book industry supply chain has evolved over many, many, years to largely enable the discovery and sales of paid for content/books, whether in print or digital form, or both. How well does our industry’s supply chain accommodate the Open Access model and what if anything needs to change? Are we making best use of the standards already available, where are the gaps and what can be done to help? In this BIC Brunch, (which will also focus on hybrid models), we explored the following topics:

• What do we mean by open Access (OA) and what are the different types?
• The OA supply chain - where do the data and content come from, where do they go, who are the users/stakeholders?
• Metadata for OA – What is already available in ONIX and recommendations for best practice
• What and where are the challenges in running OA alongside traditional models (a hybrid approach)?

Green BIC Brunch February 2022

Green Book Supply Chain 101

Thursday 24th February 2022 12:00 -13:00 (GMT)

#greenbicbrunch

Kindly sponsored by: Publishing Scotland

Introduction

Increasingly, global book industry standards – such as ONIX and Thema – are being adopted worldwide with a view to bettering international communications, discoverability, and increasing sales. But what does this mean for the book industry’s supply chain? What is the scale of our industry’s carbon footprint and its consumption of plastic? How can your organisation increase its sustainability whilst reducing its overall environmental impact? And what does the future hold? This Green BIC Brunch explored these questions and the key concerns highlighted in the results of a recent Publishing Scotland survey:

- Shipping and distribution

- Waste and packaging (including plastics)

- Production – printing, inks, materials.
